Macbook: Transferring a video to Photos in order to upload to TikTok from an iPhone

Hardware discussed: MacBook Pro, iPhone
Apps discussed: Photos app (laptop), TikTop app (phone)
Assumptions: that your Mac and iPhone have the Photos app sync’d.

Preamble

This blog post is for anyone who has a video file on their Mac computer (I’m using my work MacBook Pro) but which is inaccessible to TikTok because it’s not currently in the Photos app on your iPhone.

There are other ways to transfer a file from your MacBook to your iPhone which include Dropbox syncing, other iCloud syncing, Airdrop, emailing it to yourself etc. However (to my knowledge) none of these will plonk the file into your Photos app, which seems to be the only place that TikTok looks.

You can also upload to TikTok directly from your laptop but if your video doesn’t have an audio track you can’t add music to it, which you can do from the phone app.

Bonus: when I have a lot of text for the description then, because I’m a fast touch-typist, I will type it into an email, send it to myself and then pick it up using the Mail app on my phone!

Instructions

1. Open Photos app on MacBook Pro
2. File » Import
3. Navigate to file, select the video file you want to import, then click Review for Import
4. Let it import
5. Once done open TikTok app on phone
6. Press the + button, then the upload button
7. Your video should be the most recent one – tap it and let it load.
8. Click ‘Add Sound’ at the top of the screen and select the music / audio track you want
9. Follow the other on-app instructions for adding a description, tags and tagging people then publish as normal.
